PERE CAMPISTOL AGUSTI

Pere Campistol Agustí is the CEO and founder of The Surf Pentagon. He completed his dental degree in Spain and worked as a general dentist in the Canary Islands for three years. Until he made one of the toughest calls of his life.... He decided to abandon his career and move to Australia to follow his passion of researching and developing training programs, to enhance performance and mitigate the risk of surf injuries.
While in Australia, Pere graduated as an Exercise Scientist at Griffith University and became a level 1 Surfing Australia Coach. He spent his first years in Australia coaching beginner surfers and proceeded to obtain his certificates III & IV in Fitness, which allowed him to start implementing dry-land training with his surfers. His dry-land training interests spin around science-informed strength & conditioning and full range mobility conditioning. He also has a strong interest in breathing and its link with performance and health. He performed a one-year mentorship at Holistic Pro Health and Performance, is an EXOS Fitness Specialist, Functional Range Conditioning, Kinstrech, Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation and Surf Survival Apnea instructor.

module 2

DANIEL MOFFATT-MARTIN

Daniel started his strength and conditioning journey in 2012 and since then has progressed through to ASCA Level 2 Coach and professional level mentor. In 2016 he opened  To The Edge High Performance Centre, a training facility dedicated to athlete development which specialises in action sports and he is currently working full time as Head Coach.

Studying at the University of New England, he is currently completing his Sport & Exercise Science degree and taking part in data collection for multiple research projects. His academic goals are to one day complete a PHD in the field of performance physiology. Since 2017 Daniel has had a working relationship with Redbull America’s performance team and is now programming and training Australian based Redbull athletes Julian Wilson and Rhiannan Iffland. Daniel also works within the Surfing Australia high performance network assisting in preparations for the Australian Olympic team.

DONNA MASING

Donna Masing is an award-winning Sports Therapist with several years of experience working with professional athletes in injury prevention, recovery and injury management. Her elite career started overseas, while she was working in the United Arab Emirates in 2008. Gaining valuable insight into the world of professional Tennis, Rugby, Triathlon and Golf she eventually turned her focus to Professional Surfing. It's safe to say she caught the bug from her first event, the US Open in 2013 - working alongside industry greats like Dr Tim Brown and Dr Warren Kramer in an integrated, open and educational environment. Donna has continued her passion of educating and sharing knowledge through opening her own clinic, which began at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre in 2015 with Dr Jeremy Sheppard. Global Performance Therapy is now the premier destination for elite sport treatment on the Tweed and Southern Gold Coasts. Although she is back working with professional athletes from other sports, Surfing is Donna's greatest love and will always be her favourite subject to work on. Donna's areas of expertise are soft tissue therapy for injury prevention, Active Release Technique, sports taping for rehabilitation & performance, and biomechanics.

DR. STEVEN DUHIG

Dr Steven Duhig is a founder of The Surf Pentagon and a Lecturer and researcher at Griffith University, Gold Coast. He is an experienced academic in exercise and sport science with almost a decade teaching within universities.
Steve investigated hamstring strains during his doctoral studies with particular attention toward Australian rules football. Since then, his research interests have broadened with a focus toward sports performance and injury prevention that compliment his current coaching appointments.
Over the past decade, Steve has worked across numerous land (Australian rules, rugby league and union, soccer and powerlifting) and water (swimming and surfing) based sports with his current appointments as a Strength and Conditioning Coach (ASCA Pro Level 2) with Griffith University's swim squad and rugby 7s team.

DR. OLIVER FARLEY

Olly is the Olympic Strength and Conditioning coach for Surfing New Zealand’s High-Performance surfers.Olly has been working within the Strength and Conditioning field for 14 years and in that time has completed a Bachelor of Sport (Coaching: Unitec), Post Grad Dip (Sports Science: AUT), Masters (Sports Science: AUT) and PhD (Sports Science: Edith Cowan University).Olly was the head exercise physiologist at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (2013-2016) where he completed his PhD and also worked with WCT and WQS professional surfers. The past years Olly has been involved training up-and-coming junior NZ athletes (Hockey, football, sailors, rowing, netball, cycling, swimming, sprinting and Paralympians) in the Pathway to Podium program – many of whom are in NZ national teams. Olly also works with a number of New Zealand professional athletes and contracts to SnowSports NZ training NZ representatives/Olympic athletes in skiing and snowboarding.

KATHRYN FERGUSON

Kate's journey with high performance sport started 9 years ago when she decided to become a Personal trainer and Remedial massage therapist. Little did she know this would result in her obtaining a bachelors degree in Myotherapy, working for five years in the Australian Football League (AFL) with the Adelaide Crows and Gold Coast Suns; seven years with the South Australian Sports institute (treating swimmers, kayakers, divers, netball and trampoline athletes) and in physiotherapy clinics in Adelaide, Gold Coast and Japan. Her passion for education around rehabilitation and recovery has since led her into four years of lecturing anatomy, myotherapy and tutoring for neurophysiology for undergraduate Health Science students. Along with this she, has been fortunate enough to spend two years as a Trainer & Assessor helping future therapists obtain their Certificate IV and Diploma in Remedial Massage Therapy. Kate additionally holds a Postgraduate in Human Nutrition.

Why is the SFS course delivered Online?

The SFS On-line course delivery mode helps us make education accessible all around the world. The Covid pandemic has come with massive improvements in Online education. Our surf education online platform includes interactive videos and learning activities, interactive questions, downloadable PDF's and a lot more.

Are the SFS lectures live or recorded?

The SFS Online certification is pre-recorded so that you can study self-paced, from anywhere at any time. 

What is Surf Foundation?

Surf Foundation involves all non-wave riding components, including coaching, breathing, paddling and duckdiving. 

What will I learn in the SFS online course?

After the completion of this course, you will understand The Surf Pentagon mission and values, and become an expert within all elements of Surf Foundation. The SFS brings foundational coaching concepts to your awareness, improving your ability to communicate, motivate, understand and coach surfers. It dives deep into the breathing pillars of; essentials (basic physiology), mechanics (respiratory muscle activation patterns and awareness), support (dynamic stability), efficiency (respiratory muscle strengthening), control (physiological and psychological regulation) and CO2 tolerance (hypercapnic exercises specific to surf situations). In this course, we will explore paddling and duckdiving in great detail, including movement phases, muscle activation patterns, mobility, stability, strength and energy systems. We will present the ADDIE System and provide a Foundational Analytic Tool Kit to assess surfers abilities and design efficient training programs for peak performance, while mitigating injury risk. Finally, the Surfer Monitoring System has been designed to track surfer's stress and recovery levels to guide the application of evidence-informed recovery strategies to elicit the best adaptations.

Can I earn CPD's or CEC's? How many?

The accreditation of the SFS with ESSA, ASCA, Fitness Australia and the NSCA is under revision and the outcome (i.e. number of CEC's or CPD's) will be announced as soon as the accreditation becomes official. 

Will this course cover wave-riding?

No, this course is focused on Surf Foundation so you become an expert at improving the activities that account for more than 80% of a surf session. Surf Performance will be covered in the Surf Performance Specialist (SPS) course. However, we strongly recommend completing the SFS to solidify your foundational knowledge. Register your interest for the SPS below to stay up-to-date with the latest news.

How does the SFS compare to other options?

The SFS is a pioneering course like no other on the market. It is the first time a group of passionate surfers and exercise scientists analyse the sport and build a training system to certify professionals. 

What type of work can I do with surfers after I get certified?

Using the ADDIE System, you will be able to Analyse, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate cutting edge surf-specific training programs to improve foundational components that account for the majority of a surf session (80%). This includes a systematic and reliable assessment protocol to design training programs for your surfers. Work with them in the swimming pool and gym to enhance all breathing components, mobility, stability, strength and energy systems. You´ll also become competent in implementing a stress monitoring system and best-practice recovery strategies. 

What support is available after the course?

TSP will offer 8-week Online Mentorships for coaches who want to solidify their knowledge and refine their practice. You will get a personal experience with direct contact to TSP Master Coaches and other like-minded individuals. Register your interest to find out more.

How do you become a Level 2 Surf Foundation Specialist?

The SFS Level 2 certification can be achieved after completion of our live SFS Mentorships. These will be made more accessible once the current pandemic resolves.
